This historic city was formerly was called Point de Galle, and is located on the southwestern coast of Sri Lanka . It is 72 miles away from Colombo and can be reached within 3 hours by car, bus or train.
The major attraction of the city itself is the ancient Dutch Fort. This UNESCO declared world Heritage Site dates from the days of Dutch colonialism over 300 years ago. Features include winding narrow streets bordered by houses and churches of the Dutch era, craft boutiques and jewellers selling precious Ceylon gems.
Other areas of the fort are vibrant and bustling: it is still a place of residence and work for many who live in Galle . Galle is situated in the southern costal belt. It is surrounded by golden sandy beaches, and the unspoiled atmosphere ensure that visitors feel their trip is unique and a step off the beaten track.
For enjoying the ocean the best months to visit are from October through to April when the sea becomes calmer with blue skies prevailing. Galle is a gateway to the Sinharaja rain forest and Uda Walawe Game Park .
